Cutting oil

WHAT IS SOLUBLE CUTTING OIL?

Metalworking fluids are a range of oils and other liquids which cool and lubricate metal workpieces during their shaping, grinding, polishing, etc. Soluble cutting oils reduce heat and friction between the cutting tool and the workpiece while preventing scorching of surfaces and the development of smoke.

The application of metalworking fluids also improves the quality of the workpiece by continuously removing fine particles, shavings and metal filings from the surface of both the tool used and the workpiece.

In addition to cutting oil there is cutting foam, an ideal product for all machining jobs like tapping, drilling and milling.

WHAT IS SOLUBLE CUTTING OIL USED FOR?

The function of soluble cutting oils is to increase the efficiency of machining operations through greater productivity, an increase in tool life over time, and an improvement in surface finish while respecting tolerances.

The main characteristics of soluble cutting oils are:

Strong cooling power,
A low initial filling cost,
No risk of fire,
A low risk of fog and smoke emission related to high cutting speeds,
The cleanliness of the work environment,
The cleanliness of the machined parts,
Low obstruction by chips and machined parts.

HOW TO USE SOLUBLE CUTTING OIL?

If the installation is not equipped with dosing mixers, the preparation of the emulsion will be done manually outside the machine-tool tank, in a perfectly clean container, an essential condition for obtaining a stable product. It is important to refer to the indications on the Technical Sheet for the dosage of the product and on the Safety Data Sheet for its handling conditions.

The industrial practice of filling the machine tool's reservoir with water, then adding the oil concentrate with the sprinkler system in circulation, is not recommended because control of the formation of the emulsion is difficult. Mixing should be done in precise proportions by pouring the oil into the water while stirring vigorously.

MAINTENANCE OF BATHS AND OIL TANKS

Periodic adjustment of the cutting oil level while it is in use is absolutely necessary as it allows measures to be taken in time to control the characteristics which affect the quality of the machining, the longevity of the baths and the quality of the environment.

Each product has its own smell. On the other hand, a change in odour is indicative of a chemical modification and must be taken into account in order to carry out additional adjustments.

As the water evaporates, additions must be made with 1 to 2% less than the recommended normal concentration. Never add only water or pure oil.
