THE BLIND RIVET, A FIXING ELEMENT WHICH MAKES THE ASSEMBLIES PERMANENT

HOW DOES A BLIND RIVET, AKA "BROKEN PIN RIVET" WORK?
 

A blind (or “pop”) rivet is so-named because it can be fixed "blind", that is to say without having access to one of the two sides of the assembly. It consists of two parts: the body (a hollow tube with a head also called a flange) and the nail (a rod responsible for deforming the body during crimping). To rivet:

• use a riveting pliers

• pull the selected nail with the riveting pliers

• the swollen part of the nail will then enter the body until the nail breaks

• the rivet remains fixed in place (hence “broken rod rivet”).
 
 

DETERMINE THE RIVET TO USE: ALUMINIUM OR STAINLESS STEEL, LARGE OR COUNTERSUNK HEAD, ETC.
 

Are you looking to identify the most suitable blind rivets for your project? Remember that there are several parameters to consider, namely:

• the material of the nail (aluminium, steel, stainless steel, copper ...), which depends on the load to be supported and the material of the part to be crimped, to reduce the risk of corrosion

• the rivet head (classic flat head for hard materials, wide head reserved for softer materials, countersunk head for an impeccable finish ...)

• the diameter of the body of the rivet, which must correspond to the diameter of the hole minus 0.2 mm

• the thickness of the part to be crossed, knowing that the rivet must not be too short, but must not exceed

• and of course the type of rivet, as we will see in the next paragraph.
